How do I get from Bali airport to Sanur? A pre-booked private transfer is the most reliable option. Sanur sits roughly 16 km east of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) and the drive takes 25–35 minutes in normal traffic via the Bypass Ngurah Rai. Vehicle options range from the Toyota Avanza (4 pax) up to Innova, Alphard, Mercedes V-Class, and Mercedes S-Class — ask us for a quote. Sanur is also the main departure point for Nusa Penida, Lembongan, and the Gili Islands by speedboat — perfect for guests who plan day trips by sea. Includes name-board meet, flight tracking, child seats, bottled water, and direct delivery to your hotel on Jl. Danau Tamblingan or anywhere in the Sanur area.

About Sanur and Getting There

Sanur is the original beach resort area of Bali — older than Seminyak, calmer than Kuta, less polished than Nusa Dua. The Belgian painter Le Mayeur de Merprès lived here in the 1930s and 40s, and the museum at his old beachfront home is still open, which gives you a sense of the timeline. Today Sanur attracts a mature, repeat-visitor crowd: long-stay retirees, families with small children, scuba divers, and travellers who care more about a good morning swim than a midnight beach club.

From DPS, the route runs east on the Bypass Ngurah Rai — a fast, mostly-straight road that bypasses Denpasar city and lands you on Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai I Gusti Ngurah Rai near the Sanur exit. From there it is a short turn into Jl. Danau Tamblingan (the main Sanur strip), Jl. Danau Poso, or Jl. Hang Tuah depending on which hotel you booked. Sixteen kilometres total, 25–35 minutes in normal traffic, no toll roads.

Sanur's geography is simple: one long beach (about 5 km), one main road parallel to the beach (Jl. Danau Tamblingan), and a few cross streets. Once you know that, navigating is easy. The beach is calm because of an offshore reef that breaks the swell, which is why families and older guests love it — the swimming is genuinely safe.

Sanur is also the speedboat hub for Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and the Gili Islands. Boats leave from the Sanur Beach harbour (Pantai Matahari Terbit) several times daily. If your trip includes a Penida or Gili day trip, having a Sanur base saves you a 30-minute drive each way from Seminyak or Ubud. Pair this transfer with our fast-track arrival service if you have an early-morning Penida boat the next day — the extra hour of sleep will be appreciated.

Why Pre-Book Your Transfer to Sanur

Sanur attracts a particular kind of traveller — quieter, often older, often with luggage that includes scuba gear or a folding wheelchair. The airport taxi counter is fine, but the vehicle dispatched is whatever is next in line, and that vehicle may not be what you actually need. Pre-booking lets us match the vehicle to the trip: a higher-clearance Innova for divers with hard cases, a Mercedes V-Class for older guests who prefer the easier step-in, an Alphard for honeymooners.

We also coordinate Sanur's particular use case: speedboat connections. If your itinerary is "land in Bali at 10 AM, catch the 1 PM speedboat to Nusa Penida," we will hold the driver after drop-off, take the bags to the hotel, and shuttle you to the harbour. Many resort transfers will not do this without a separate booking.

For full white-glove arrival, combine this transfer with our meet and greet service, the VIP assistance package, or our VVIP handling. Hyatt Regency, Andaz, and the smaller boutique resorts all routinely partner with us for guest transfers.

Ride-share apps are unreliable from DPS due to airport pickup restrictions. Sanur addresses are usually well-mapped (unlike Uluwatu villas), but the friction of the airport pickup itself makes pre-booking the smarter call after a long flight.

Local Tips for Sanur Arrivals

Bypass traffic is generally tame.

The Bypass Ngurah Rai moves freely most of the day. The exception is rush hour around Simpang Siur and Sanur Bypass intersection between 7–9 AM and 5–7 PM, when transfer time can stretch from 25 to 45 minutes.

Sanur is easy to walk.

Once you arrive, most hotels are within a 10-minute walk to the beach and a 15-minute walk to multiple cafés and restaurants on Jl. Danau Tamblingan. The beach promenade itself runs the full 5 km and is flat and pleasant — perfect for an early-morning walk.

Speedboat departure is early.

Most Nusa Penida speedboats depart between 7 AM and 9:30 AM. The Sanur Beach harbour (Pantai Matahari Terbit) is at the north end of the strip, about 5 minutes from any Sanur hotel by car. Plan your airport arrival the day before if you have a morning boat.

Le Mayeur Museum is worth an hour.

Right on the beach next to Inna Grand Bali Beach, the small museum housing Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur's Sanur paintings is a quiet, atmospheric stop. Closed Mondays.

Sunrise here is the move.

Unlike west coast Seminyak/Canggu (sunset coast), Sanur faces east. Sunrise over the bay is genuinely spectacular and largely unbothered by crowds. The Bali Hai Cruise pier and Tandjung Sari beach are both excellent vantage points.

Bali Airport to Sanur — Common Questions

25–35 minutes via the Bypass Ngurah Rai in normal traffic. Add 10–15 minutes for rush-hour arrivals (7–9 AM, 5–7 PM). Sanur is on the east side of Denpasar, so traffic patterns differ from Seminyak/Canggu — Sunset Road bottlenecks do not affect Sanur runs. Late-night arrivals after 10 PM clear in 22 minutes flat.

Yes. Sanur is the calmest, most laid-back of Bali's main beach areas. The beach is reef-protected (good for swimming, not surfing), the dining scene is quality without being trendy, and most resorts are mid-rise, low-density properties with mature gardens. It is a great fit for families with small children, older travellers, divers, and anyone who wants morning swims and early dinners rather than beach clubs and late nights.

Closer than Seminyak — Sanur to Ubud is about 60–75 minutes by car (vs 90+ from Seminyak). Many guests do a few nights in Sanur, then a few in Ubud. We can do the inter-island transfer for a fixed price too, or extend the airport transfer to a full Sanur arrival + onward Ubud transfer the next day.

Absolutely. Many guests arrive on a morning flight and head straight to the Sanur Beach harbour for the Nusa Penida or Lembongan boat. We will route directly to the harbour (no hotel stop) and drop you at the right pier — the Penida operators (Maruti Express, Crown Fast Cruises, Caspla, etc.) all use slightly different pickup points along the same beach. Tell us the operator name when booking.

Yes — we coordinate the full package: hotel pickup, speedboat tickets (we recommend specific operators), Penida private car and English-speaking guide for the day, return speedboat, hotel drop. Pricing depends on group size and route (West Penida loop with Kelingking, or East Penida with Diamond Beach) — send a WhatsApp message with your dates and we will quote.

Some do, particularly the larger international brands (Hyatt Regency, Andaz). Pricing is usually $40–70 and the experience is fine. Smaller boutique resorts often partner with independent providers (sometimes us). Either way, pre-book — the worst option is to walk up to the airport taxi counter after a long flight and hope for the best.

Beyond Sanur

Sanur is a great base for east-coast Bali and the Penida islands. We also offer fixed-price transfers from DPS to Seminyak, Nusa Dua, Uluwatu, and Jimbaran.
